Dog Food – Best freeze dried dog food – Spot & Tango
Introduction
I recently discussed dog food options with my vet and got the same answer that probably every vet is programmed to say: “We just recommend a science backed kibble that is not high in protein. Don’t do any of the raw food or high protein diets – they’re linked to cancer and other diseases.” Ok. I don’t believe her. I know vets go to school for an extra 3 years but I don’t count that as a real doctorate. Sort of like Chiropractors but not quite as bad. Anyway, I even though I haven’t fully accepted her response, I do think there’s an “in between” answer that is going to capture the health benefits of raw and still meet the “science backed” element that should be present for dog food – freeze dried dog food.
Benefits of freeze dried dog food:
- Tastier than kibble – maintains the flavors, smells and colors of the food it was created from.
- Healthier than kibble – as discussed in the scientific paper linked to above, freeze dried food maintains the biochemical and immunological properties of the original food it was derived from.
- More stable shelf life than raw/frozen – freeze dried food is shelf stable which makes it just as convenient for travel and long-term storage as kibble.
- Rehydrating capabilities – IF your dog is struggling to hydrate for some reason, you can rehydrate the freeze dried food. This won’t change the chemical properties but it could make it more palatable.
Conclusion:
The benefits listed above only matter if the original ingredients of the dog food are based on an appropriate diet for dogs which must include many of the micronutrients that are included in kibble. The base ingredients for freeze dried dog foods tend to be high quality, human grade foods, but to meet all of the nutritional requirements of dogs should align with the science backed kibbles. That is something you will have to verify through reviewing the ingredients of each freeze dried food.
