Spot & Tango – Dog Food Review
Introduction
Spot & Tango is highly rated by many websites so I wanted to try it for my dog. Luckily, there was a substancial discount on the first 2 weeks of food so it was very affordable to try. I chose the “unkibble” option for my 106lb Doberman and 3 different flavor/protein options. Here are the results of trying this food for two weeks:
Affordability (2.5/5.0 Stars)
This product is not affordable if you have a large breed dog and are on a tight budget. The pre discount cost of these meals was $81.83 pre tax which equates to $11.69/day (~6 cups). This isn’t the most affordable option. Certainly not on par with Darwins or other prepared food services but still not in the budget for most households. With the discount and taxes included my total for the two weeks of food was $89.61 or $6.40/day which is not terrible. This is approximately double the cost of a premium kibble so still strongly in the do not buy unless you have a lot of money to spend on dog food.
Health Benefits (4.0/5.0 Stars)
The idea behind unkibble is to capture the benefits of fresh food with the convenience of kibble through freeze drying. I can’t speak to the efficacy of this method of food preparation but do know that this is commonly done with human food. You can read more about their methods on the Company’s website here. I can’t rank it with food that is freshly prepared that a lot of the subscription services provide so it gets a 4 out of 5 stars which is still pretty good.
Practicality/Convenience (4.5/5.0 Stars)
This food has all the convenience of kibble with the small exception that it takes up more space than most kibbles. It comes in small bags that are extremely light and I have to feed my dog about 50% more cups to get to the same number of calories as Orijen for example so I’ve knocked down the convenience to 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Conclusion
Spot & Tango is a good option for travelers who don’t have refrigeration but can afford premium dog food, or I guess, anyone who wants the convenience and most of the freshness and health benefits of raw or freshly prepared dog foods. Check out our review of The Farmer’s Table dog food here.
